Context — A Prophecy against the House of Eli
28And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected your father to be My priest, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in My presence. I also gave to the house of your father all the food offerings of the Israelites.
29Why then do you kick at My sacrifice and offering that I have prescribed for My dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than Me by fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’ 30Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disdained.Cross References

1 Samuel 2:28 Summary
This verse is talking about how God chose Eli's family to be His priests and to serve Him. God gave them the job of offering sacrifices and burning incense, and He provided for their needs through the offerings of the Israelites. Just like the priests had to be careful to honor God's presence, we should also be careful to honor God with our lives, as seen in 1 Samuel 2:30 and Deuteronomy 10:12-13. We can do this by prioritizing His will above our own desires and being mindful of our actions and attitudes, just like the Bible teaches in Proverbs 3:5-6.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that God selected Eli's father to be His priest?
This means that God chose Eli's family to serve as spiritual leaders for the Israelites, just like He chose Aaron and his sons in Exodus 4:14 and Exodus 28:1 to be priests.
Why did God give the house of Eli all the offerings of the Israelites made by fire?
God gave these offerings to the house of Eli as a way of providing for their physical needs, just like He provided for the priests in Deuteronomy 18:1 and Numbers 18:8-24.
What is the significance of the ephod in God's presence?
The ephod was a special garment worn by the high priest when he entered God's presence, as seen in Exodus 28:6-14 and Leviticus 8:7-9, and it symbolized the priest's role as a mediator between God and the people.
How does this verse relate to the rest of the chapter?
This verse is part of a larger rebuke by God to Eli, in which He expresses disappointment with Eli's failure to discipline his sons and honor God's sacrifices, as seen in 1 Samuel 2:29-30.
