1 Samuel 26:19
1 Samuel 26:19 in Multiple Translations
Now please, may my lord the king hear the words of his servant: If the LORD has stirred you up against me, then may He accept an offering. But if men have done it, may they be cursed in the presence of the LORD! For today they have driven me away from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’
Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.
Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it be Jehovah that hath stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if it be the children of men, cursed be they before Jehovah; for they have driven me out this day that I should not cleave unto the inheritance of Jehovah, saying, Go, serve other gods.
Let my lord the king give ear now to the words of his servant. If it is the Lord who is moving you against me, let him take an offering: but if it is the children of men, may they be cursed before the Lord, for driving me out today and keeping me from my place in the heritage of the Lord, saying, Go, be the servant of other gods.
“Please listen to me, my lord and king. If the Lord has made you angry with me, then may he be happy to accept an offering. But if it's men that have done it, may they be cursed before the Lord for all this. They've been driving me away from living among God's chosen people, telling me, ‘Go away and worship other gods.’
Now therefore, I beseech thee, let my lord the King heare the wordes of his seruant. If the Lord haue stirred thee vp against me, let him smell the sauour of a sacrifice: but if the children of men haue done it, cursed be they before the Lord: for they haue cast me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the Lord, saying, Goe, serue other gods.
And, now, let, I pray thee, my lord the king hear the words of his servant: if Jehovah hath moved thee against me, let Him accept a present; and if the sons of men — cursed [are] they before Jehovah, for they have cast me out to-day from being admitted into the inheritance of Jehovah, saying, Go, serve other gods.
Now therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is so that the LORD has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is the children of men, they are cursed before the LORD; for they have driven me out today that I shouldn’t cling to the LORD’s inheritance, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods!’
Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD hath stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they are the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.
Now therefore hear, I pray thee, my lord the king, the words of thy servant: If the Lord stir thee up against me, let him accept of sacrifice: but if the sons of men, they are cursed in the sight of the Lord, who have cast me out this day, that I should not dwell in the inheritance of the Lord, saying: Go, serve strange gods.
Your majesty, listen to me! If Yahweh has caused you to be angry with me, I should offer a sacrifice in order to appease him. But if it is people who have caused you to be angry with me, I hope/desire that Yahweh will curse them. They have forced me to leave the land that Yahweh gave to me. They have told me, ‘Go somewhere else and worship other gods!’
Listen carefully to me. Did God tell you to hate me? If yes, then I have to burn meat to give to him, so he will change his mind. But maybe it was some other men that told you to hate me? They hunted me away from my people, so God has to punish them. They don’t let me live in my country. I’m like a stranger. I have to live in another country now. The people there follow other gods. I can’t live for God properly.

20So do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the LORD. For the king of Israel has come out to look for a flea, like one who hunts a partridge in the mountains.” 21Then Saul replied, “I have sinned. Come back, David my son. I will never harm you again, because today you considered my life precious. I have played the fool and have committed a grave error!”Cross References

1 Samuel 26:19 Summary
[In this verse, David is asking King Saul to listen to his side of the story and understand that he is being wrongly pursued. David is willing to submit to God's will, even if it means sacrifice, and he trusts that God is in control of all circumstances. This is similar to what we see in Psalm 37:3-7, where we are encouraged to trust in God and do good, and He will provide for us. By trusting in God's sovereignty and providence, we can stand firm in our faith and know that He is working all things out for our good, as seen in Romans 8:28.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does David mean by 'the inheritance of the LORD' in this verse?
David is referring to his rightful place among God's people, where he can worship and serve the one true God, as seen in Deuteronomy 10:9 and Psalm 16:5-6.
Why does David ask the king to hear his words?
David wants the king to understand his situation and recognize that he is being wrongly pursued, much like the prophets of old who cried out for justice, as seen in Isaiah 1:17 and Micah 6:8.
What is the significance of David's request for an offering if the LORD has stirred up the king against him?
David is acknowledging God's sovereignty and showing his willingness to submit to God's will, even if it means sacrifice, as seen in Romans 12:1 and Hebrews 13:15-16.
How does this verse relate to the concept of trusting in God's providence?
David's words demonstrate his trust in God's providence, recognizing that God is in control of all circumstances, whether they are caused by human actions or divine intervention, as seen in Proverbs 16:9 and Jeremiah 29:11.

- How can I, like David, trust in God's sovereignty and providence when faced with difficult circumstances?
- In what ways can I offer myself as a 'living sacrifice' to God, as mentioned in Romans 12:1, and how does this relate to David's request for an offering in this verse?
- What does it mean to 'consider my life precious' in the eyes of God, as David did with Saul's life, and how can I apply this principle in my relationships with others?
