16Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—has appeared to me and said: I have surely attended to you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt.
17And I have promised to bring you up out of your affliction in Egypt, into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.’ 18The elders of Israel will listen to what you say, and you must go with them to the king of Egypt and tell him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Exodus 3:16 Summary
[In this verse, God tells Moses to go to the Israelites and let them know that He has seen their suffering in Egypt and is going to rescue them. This shows that God is a God who cares about His people and wants to help them, just like He helped Hagar in Genesis 21:17-20. God is reminding the Israelites of His covenant promises to their ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and is establishing His relationship with them as their God. This is an important part of God's overall plan to bring His people into a relationship with Himself, as seen in Exodus 19:1-6 and fulfilled in Jesus Christ.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did God instruct Moses to assemble the elders of Israel?
God instructed Moses to assemble the elders of Israel so that they could hear His message and believe that Moses was truly sent by God, as seen in Exodus 3:16 and Exodus 4:29-31, where Moses gathered the elders and they believed after seeing the signs performed by Moses.
What does it mean that God has 'attended to' the Israelites in Egypt?
When God says He has 'attended to' the Israelites in Egypt, it means He has seen their suffering and is aware of their affliction, similar to how He saw the suffering of Hagar in Genesis 16:13, and is now taking action to rescue them.
Why does God refer to Himself as 'the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob' in this verse?
God refers to Himself as 'the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob' to remind the Israelites of His covenant promises to their ancestors, as seen in Genesis 17:1-14 and Genesis 28:13-15, and to establish His relationship with them as their God.
How does this verse relate to God's overall plan of salvation?
This verse is a part of God's larger plan to rescue His people from bondage and bring them into a covenant relationship with Himself, as seen in Exodus 19:1-6 and fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate deliverer of God's people, as seen in Luke 4:18-19.

- How can I, like Moses, be a vessel for God to use in bringing hope and rescue to those around me who are suffering?
- In what ways can I trust God's promise to be with me, just as He was with the Israelites in Egypt, and how can I apply this trust to my everyday life?
- What are some 'Egypts' in my own life that God wants to deliver me from, and how can I cooperate with Him in this process?
