Context — Reproof of False Prophetesses
19You have profaned Me among My people for handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. By lying to My people who would listen, you have killed those who should not have died and spared those who should not have lived.
20Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: See, I am against the magic charms with which you ensnare souls like birds, and I will tear them from your arms. So I will free the souls you have ensnared like birds. 21I will also tear off your veils and deliver My people from your hands, so that they will no longer be prey in your hands. Then you will know that I am the LORD.Cross References

Ezekiel 13:19 Summary
[This verse is talking about people who claim to speak for God but are actually just looking out for themselves. They are more interested in getting ahead and being popular than in sharing God's truth, as seen in Ezekiel 13:19. By doing this, they are hurting the people who are listening to them and leading them away from God, which is why it's so important to be careful about who we listen to and to always check what they say against what the Bible says, like in Acts 17:11. We should strive to be faithful to God and honest with others, just like God is faithful to us and desires truth in our innermost being, as written in Psalms 51:6.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to profane God's name?
To profane God's name means to treat Him or speak of Him in a way that is disrespectful or dishonoring, often for personal gain, as seen in Ezekiel 13:19 where the prophets are selling out for 'handfuls of barley and scraps of bread'
How can lying to people be considered a form of killing them?
In Ezekiel 13:19, lying to God's people is considered a form of killing because it leads them away from the truth and the life that comes from following God, as also warned in Proverbs 19:9 and Revelation 21:8
What is the significance of 'handfuls of barley and scraps of bread' in this verse?
The 'handfuls of barley and scraps of bread' represent the small, worldly rewards that the false prophets are accepting in exchange for their loyalty to God, highlighting the contrast between their selfish desires and God's desire for their faithfulness, similar to the warning in 1 Timothy 6:10
How does this verse relate to our modern-day struggles with truth and deception?
This verse reminds us that speaking truth and being faithful to God is crucial, and that we must be careful not to compromise our values for personal gain, as warned in 2 Timothy 4:3-4, and instead strive to be like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, who searched the scriptures to verify the truth
