30For the children of Israel and of Judah have done nothing but evil in My sight from their youth; indeed, they have done nothing but provoke Me to anger by the work of their hands, declares the LORD.
31For this city has aroused My wrath and fury from the day it was built until now. Therefore I will remove it from My presence 32because of all the evil the children of Israel and of Judah have done to provoke Me to anger—they, their kings, their officials, their priests and prophets, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem.Cross References

| 1 | Jeremiah 7:22–26 | For when I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt, I did not merely command them about burnt offerings and sacrifices, but this is what I commanded them: Obey Me, and I will be your God, and you will be My people. You must walk in all the ways I have commanded you, so that it may go well with you. Yet they did not listen or incline their ear, but they followed the stubborn inclinations of their own evil hearts. They went backward and not forward. From the day your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have sent you all My servants the prophets again and again. Yet they would not listen to Me or incline their ear, but they stiffened their necks and did more evil than their fathers. |
| 2 | Deuteronomy 9:7–12 | Remember this, and never forget how you provoked the LORD your God in the wilderness. From the day you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place, you have been rebelling against the LORD. At Horeb you provoked the LORD, and He was angry enough to destroy you. When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I ate no bread and drank no water. Then the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, inscribed by the finger of God with the exact words that the LORD spoke to you out of the fire on the mountain on the day of the assembly. And at the end of forty days and forty nights, the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. And the LORD said to me, “Get up and go down from here at once, for your people, whom you brought out of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. How quickly they have turned aside from the way that I commanded them! They have made for themselves a molten image.” |

| 9 | Ezekiel 20:8 | But they rebelled against Me and refused to listen. None of them cast away the abominations before their eyes, and they did not forsake the idols of Egypt. So I resolved to pour out My wrath upon them and vent My anger against them in the land of Egypt. |
| 10 | Nehemiah 9:16–37 | But they and our fathers became arrogant and stiff-necked and did not obey Your commandments. They refused to listen and failed to remember the wonders You performed among them. They stiffened their necks and appointed a leader to return them to their bondage in Egypt. But You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in loving devotion, and You did not forsake them. Even when they cast for themselves an image of a calf and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and when they committed terrible blasphemies, You in Your great compassion did not forsake them in the wilderness. By day the pillar of cloud never turned away from guiding them on their path; and by the night the pillar of fire illuminated the way they should go. You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold Your manna from their mouths, and You gave them water for their thirst. For forty years You sustained them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell. You gave them kingdoms and peoples and allotted to them every corner of the land. So they took the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and of Og king of Bashan. You multiplied their descendants like the stars of heaven and brought them to the land You had told their fathers to enter and possess. So their descendants went in and possessed the land; You subdued before them the Canaanites dwelling in the land. You delivered into their hands the kings and peoples of the land, to do with them as they wished. They captured fortified cities and fertile land and took houses full of all goods, wells already dug, vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled; they grew fat and delighted in Your great goodness. But they were disobedient and rebelled against You; they flung Your law behind their backs. They killed Your prophets, who had admonished them to return to You. They committed terrible blasphemies. So You delivered them into the hands of enemies who oppressed them, and in their time of distress they cried out to You. From heaven You heard them, and in Your great compassion You gave them deliverers who saved them from the hands of their enemies. But as soon as they had rest, they again did evil in Your sight. So You abandoned them to the hands of their enemies, who had dominion over them. When they cried out to You again, You heard from heaven, and You delivered them many times in Your compassion. You admonished them to turn back to Your law, but they were arrogant and disobeyed Your commandments. They sinned against Your ordinances, by which a man will live if he practices them. They stubbornly shrugged their shoulders; they stiffened their necks and would not obey. You were patient with them for many years, and Your Spirit admonished them through Your prophets. Yet they would not listen, so You gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples. But in Your great compassion, You did not put an end to them; nor did You forsake them, for You are a gracious and compassionate God. So now, our God, the great and mighty and awesome God who keeps His gracious covenant, do not view lightly all the hardship that has come upon us, and upon our kings and leaders, our priests and prophets, our ancestors and all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today. You are just in all that has befallen us, because You have acted faithfully, while we have acted wickedly. Our kings and leaders and priests and fathers did not obey Your law or listen to Your commandments and warnings that You gave them. For even while they were in their kingdom, with the abundant goodness that You had given them, and in the spacious and fertile land that You had set before them, they would not serve You or turn from their wicked ways. So here we are today as slaves in the land You gave our fathers to enjoy its fruit and goodness— here we are as slaves! Its abundant harvest goes to the kings You have set over us because of our sins. And they rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please. We are in great distress. |
Jeremiah 32:30 Summary
[This verse is saying that the people of Israel and Judah have been disobeying God and doing wrong things from the time they were young, which is why God is very upset with them, as seen in Jeremiah 32:30. This reminds us of the importance of obeying God's commands, as taught in Deuteronomy 6:1-3, and being faithful to Him, as encouraged in 1 Corinthians 4:2. We should strive to please God with our actions and hearts, as instructed in Colossians 3:20 and 2 Corinthians 5:9, and avoid the kind of rebellion that led to God's judgment on Israel and Judah.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that the children of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in God's sight from their youth?
This phrase emphasizes the long history of rebellion against God, as seen in Jeremiah 32:30, and is reminiscent of the pattern of disobedience established in the wilderness, as described in Numbers 14:22 and Deuteronomy 9:7.
How can God say that the children of Israel and Judah have done nothing but provoke Him to anger by the work of their hands?
This statement highlights the pervasive nature of their sin, as they consistently chose to worship other gods and engage in idolatrous practices, such as burning incense to Baal, as mentioned in Jeremiah 32:29 and Jeremiah 11:17.
Is God being unfair by judging the children of Israel and Judah for their actions?
No, God is a just and righteous Judge, as declared in Deuteronomy 32:4, and His judgment is a response to the people's persistent disobedience and rebellion against Him, as seen in Jeremiah 32:30 and throughout the book of Jeremiah.
What can we learn from the children of Israel and Judah's mistakes?
We can learn the importance of obedience to God's commands and the dangers of idolatry and rebellion, as warned in 1 Corinthians 10:11 and Romans 11:22-23, and we should strive to cultivate a heart of repentance and faithfulness, as encouraged in 2 Chronicles 7:14 and Matthew 4:17.

- In what ways can I, like the children of Israel and Judah, be tempted to turn away from God and towards idolatry, and how can I guard against those temptations?
- What does it mean for me to 'do nothing but evil' in God's sight, and how can I ensure that my actions and heart are pleasing to Him?
