Sections marked generated are written from the data on this page rather than by a named author. Everything else — the lexicon entries, the cross references, the manuscript readings, the counts — is quoted from its source unchanged.

Context — Genealogy of Judahgenerated

27The sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel: Maaz, Jamin, and Eker.
28The sons of Onam: Shammai and Jada. The sons of Shammai: Nadab and Abishur.
29Abishur’s wife was named Abihail, and she bore to him Ahban and Molid.
30The sons of Nadab: Seled and Appaim. Seled died without children.

1 Chronicles 2:28 provides a record of the descendants of Onam, highlighting the names of his sons, Shammai and Jada, and further detailing the lineage of Shammai through his sons, Nadab and Abishur. This genealogy serves to establish the heritage and connections within the tribe of Judah, emphasizing the significance of family ties in the biblical narrative.

Cross References

The Key Word אוֹנָם, 'o.Namgenerated

The name אוֹנָם ('Onaam) means 'vigor' or 'strength'. It refers to two individuals in the Bible, one being an Edomite chief and the other an Israelite from the tribe of Judah. The name signifies vitality and is used to denote lineage and heritage in genealogical contexts.

As a proper noun, אוֹנָם is parsed as a masculine noun, indicating a specific individual rather than a common term. Its usage in genealogies highlights the importance of ancestry and the connections between families.

How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated

This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.

Sentence Structuregenerated

The finite verb governing the verse is וַיִּהְי֥וּ, and they were, which introduces the subject of the sentence: the sons of Onam. The structure follows with a noun phrase for the subject and another for the object, clearly delineating the relationships within the genealogy.

The Hebrew word order places emphasis on the names of the sons, with the verb coming first, indicating the introduction of these key figures in the lineage.

Septuagint Backgroundgenerated

The Septuagint translates אוֹנָם as οζομ, which reflects a direct rendering of the name without additional interpretation. This choice shows a straightforward approach to the genealogy, maintaining the focus on the individuals named.

The Greek word used does not carry additional connotations, indicating that the translators aimed to preserve the original meaning of the Hebrew names.

In plain words — the whole versegenerated

1 Chronicles 2:28 lists the sons of Onam as Shammai and Jada, and it continues to describe the sons of Shammai, who are Nadab and Abishur. This verse is part of a genealogy that emphasizes family connections and heritage within the tribe of Judah.

In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.
