23The son of Dan: Hushim.
24The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
25These are the sons of Jacob born to Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel—seven in all.
26All those belonging to Jacob who came to Egypt—his direct descendants, besides the wives of Jacob’s sons—numbered sixty-six persons.

Genesis 46:24 provides a genealogical record of Jacob's sons, specifically focusing on Naphtali's descendants. This verse is part of a larger narrative that outlines the lineage of the twelve tribes of Israel, emphasizing the importance of family heritage and tribal identity. The listing of names reflects the historical context of the Israelites during their time in Egypt, as they prepare for the eventual Exodus.

The Key Word בֵּן, u.ve.Neigenerated

The word בֵּן (ben) means 'son' or 'child' and encompasses a wide range of meanings, including descendants and family relationships. Its usage in this verse highlights the connection between Naphtali and his offspring, establishing their identity within the Israelite tribes.

As a common masculine noun in the plural construct form, it indicates the direct lineage of Naphtali, showing the importance of these names in the context of Israel's history and the fulfillment of God's promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated

This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.

Sentence Structuregenerated

The finite verb is absent here as the verse is a straightforward list. The structure is simple: a noun phrase identifies the subject, followed by a list of names as the predicate.

The Hebrew word order places emphasis on the names of Naphtali's sons, presenting them as significant figures in the lineage of the tribes.

Septuagint Backgroundgenerated

The Septuagint translates בֵּן as υἱοὶ, maintaining the meaning of 'sons' while reflecting the Greek language's structure. This choice aligns with the Hebrew intent of denoting lineage.

The lack of variation in the names between the Hebrew and the Septuagint indicates a consistent understanding of these figures in both traditions.

In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.
