1 Chronicles 2:1

THese are, &c.] All the genealogies following are of such as were of the Church; for Jacob had the happinesse to have all his children to be of the Church: out of his issue, the Church began to spread.

Israel] Or, Jacob.

Israel] Of the meaning of this name, and reason of giving it, see Genesis 32:28. The Church under the Law (Exodus 4:23. Deuteronomy 4:1.) and under the Gospel (Galat. 6. 16.) had this name.

Reuben] Genesis 29:32. and 30. 5. and 35. 18, 21. and 46. 8, &c. These were the heads of the twelve tribes, and are stiled, The twelve patriarchs, Acts 7:8.

1 Chronicles 2:3

Judah] Genesis 38:3. and 46. 12. His genealogie is first set down, by reason of the royall dignity setled on him (Genesis 49:10.) and the descent of the Messiah from him, Luke 3:33.

the Canaanitesse] This hath relation to daughter; for Shua was a man, Genesis 38:2.

Tamar] Gen. 38. 29, 30. She is put into the catalogue of Christs progenitours, as Rahab and Ruth (Matth. 1. 3, 5.) to shew, Christ came to save sinners, both of Jews and Gentils.

sons of Zeruiah] 2 Samuel 2:18. They are called by their mothers name for her honours sake. Their father is no where expressed. See the Notes on 1 Samuel 26:6.

Abigail] 2 Samuel 17:25.

Ishmaelite] Jether was an Ishmeelite by birth, but by profession an Israelite, 2 Samuel 17:25.

1 Chronicles 2:18

Caleb] He is called Chelubai, v. 9. This was not that Caleb who was, among others, sent to search the land (Numbers 13:7.) and after entred into Canaan (Numbers 14:30.) That Caleb’s genealogie is set down, Chap. 4. 15.

Bezaleel] Exodus 31:2.

1 Chronicles 2:21

went in] This is a modest expression of the matrimoniall duty: such an one is this, Knew her, Genesis 4:1.

father of Gilead] Numbers 26:29.

married] Heb. took.

threescore yeers old] Heb. a son of threescore yeers.

father of Ziph] Of the inhabitants of Ziph, a city in the tribe of Judah, Josh. 15, 55. The word, father, may here be taken for a planter or first establisher of a city. So v. 45, 49.

of Beth-zur] Of the inhabitants of Beth-zur: for this also was a city in the tribe of Judah, Joshua 15:58.

the sons] Moza (v. 46.) is supposed to be here understood, thus, And the sons of Moza were Jahdai.

Madmannah, Machbenah and Gibeah, are three cities in the tribe of Judah, Josh. 15. 35, 57. See the Notes on v. 42.

Achsah] Another Caleb also had a daughter of this name, Joshua 15:17.

son of Hur] Hur was the son of Caleb before mentioned, v. 19. so as this Caleb son of Hur, was the other Caleb’s grand-childe.

father] See v. 42. Kirjath-jearim was a city in Judah, Joshua 15:9.

Beth-lehem] In part; for Ephratah also had a part, chap. 4. 4.

1 Chronicles 2:52

Haroeh] Or, Reaiah, chap. 4. 2. Haroeh may be taken appellatively, and thus translated, He was over-seer (or governour) of half of the Manahethites.

half of the Manahethites] Or, half of the Menuchites, or Hatsi-hammenuchoth.

Ithrites] These families descended from Shobal, v. 52.

Netophathies] Such as came of the city or family of Netophati, in the tribe of Judah.

Ataroth, the house of Joab] Or, Atarites, or crowns of the house of Joab.

house] Family, or posterity of Joab.

1 Chronicles 2:55

scribes] Such as were employed in writing, or publike notaries which descended from the Kenites, and dwelt with the children of Judah, Judg. 1. 16.
