1 In ROM 7:15 πράσσω (42.8) and ποιέω seem to be semantically interchangeable, but there may be some subtle stylistic distinction. 2 Any meaning involving ‘to cause to be’ implies some change in state, and therefore one could classify these meanings under Subdomain B Change of State (Domain 13 Be, Become, Exist, Happen). However, the focus seems to be primarily upon the changed state rather than upon the process of moving from one state to another. The fact that a change of state has taken place seems to be semantically incidental. 3 By setting up certain highly generic meanings for βλαστάνω, δίδωμι, ἀποδίδωμι, and ποιέω, it would be possible to treat the phrase compounds in this series as being semantically endocentric. However, it seems more satisfactory to regard them as what might be called low-grade idioms with specialized meanings of the semantically head expressions.

The phrase μὴ ἄλλως ποιήσεις is used in cases of urgency as in the letter already quoted, 76. For the strong sense of ποιέω, ‘‘am effective,” as in the “‘working”’ of charms, cf. P Osl I. 141 (iv/a.bD.) εἰς πάντα ποιῶν, with the editors note. In P Oxy XII. 1480! (a.p. 32) πεπόητε εἰς τὸν ἐκλογιστήν, instead of the editors’ rendering ‘‘ he has made it (a delay spoken of) as far as the eclogistes is concerned (?),” Olsson (Papyrusbriefe, p. 75) thinks that ποιέω may be used for mpatrw—‘‘he has arranged it with the eclogistes.”’ The phrase ποιεῖν μετά τινος, ‘to act on someone's behalf,”” is common in the LXX (Gen 24" a/.), but in the NT is confined to Luke (e.g. 1°?, τοῦ, Ac 1477). It is often regarded as a Hebraism (Blass Gr. p. 134, Souter Lex. s.v., but see Ktihring, p. 35, Pro/eg. p. 106, Robertson (γ΄. Ρ- 610f.). The only instances we can quote from the papyri are late—BGU III. 9488 (iv/A.p.) καλιοότερεν (/. καλλιότερον). . . ἐποίησα peta σοῦ, 16. 7987 (Byz.) els “πάντα τὰ καλὰ ἃ ἐποίησεν μετὰ τῶν δούλων αὐτῆς.
