1 Chronicles 11
BSA1 Then all [every single one, the entire nation] Israel came together [gathered, assembled] to David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] at Hebron [a city in Palestine, a place of gathering] and said, “Here we are [behold, we have come], your own [relatives] flesh [body, humanity] and blood [family, kin]. word study 2 Even in times past [yesterday, and the day before], while Saul [Shaul, the king of Israel] was king, you were the one who led [guided, directed] Israel [the descendants of Jacob] out and brought them back. And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the supreme Being] said, ‘You will shepherd [care for, tend to] My people Israel [the nation of Israel], and you will be ruler [leader, commander] over them [as their king].’” word study 3 So all [the entire assembly of] the elders [respected leaders, men of authority] of Israel came to the king [the monarch, ruler] at Hebron [a city in Judah, a place of covenant], where David made a covenant [a solemn agreement, a binding promise] with them before the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God]. And they anointed [set apart, consecrated] him king [the ruler, monarch] over Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people], according to the word [the spoken command, the divine decree] of the LORD [the sovereign God] through Samuel [the prophet, God’s messenger]. word study 4 Then David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] and all [every single one] the Israelites [descendants of Jacob, the symbolic name of Jacob] marched to Jerusalem [the city of peace, also known as Jebus] (that is, Jebus [the original name, meaning’threshing place’]), where [in that location, at that time] the Jebusites [the inhabitants of Jebus, descendants of Jebus] inhabited [lived, dwelled, remained] the land [the soil, ground, or region]. word study 5 The people [inhabitants, residents] of Jebus [the original name of Jerusalem, meaning’threshing place’] said to David [the youngest son of Jesse and a king of Israel], “You will never [not, under no circumstances] get in here [enter this place, come inside].” Nevertheless [in spite of their warning], David [the king of Israel] captured [took, seized] the fortress [stronghold, castle] of Zion [a mountain in Jerusalem, often used as another name for the city] (that is [namely], the City [town, settlement] of David). word study 6 Now David [the king of Israel, a man after God’s heart] had said, “Whoever [any warrior, no matter the rank] is the first [before all others, with priority] to strike down [to smite, defeat, or conquer] a Jebusite [an inhabitant of Jebus, the early name for Jerusalem] will become [be appointed, or established as] chief commander [head, leader, or captain].” And Joab [Jehovah is father, a prominent Israelite] son of Zeruiah [balsam or fragrant oil, David’s sister] went up [to ascend, rise, or climb] first [before all others, with precedence], and he became [was established, or appointed as] the chief [head, leader, or ruler]. word study 7 So David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] took up residence [dwelt, lived] in the fortress [stronghold, a safe place]; that is why [thus, in confirmation] it was called [named, designated] the City [a place with a wall or a watchman] of David [a king of Israel]. word study 8 He built up [established, restored] the city [settlement, town] around it, from the supporting terraces [Millo, the citadel] to the surrounding wall [the enclosing barrier], while Joab [Jehovah is father, King David’s nephew] restored [repaired, revived] the rest [remnant, remaining part] of the city. word study 9 And David [became more and more powerful, waxed greater] became greater and greater [in power, in influence], for the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of Israel] of Hosts [the armies of heaven, the Commander of angelic forces] was with [together with, in intimate relationship] him. word study 10 Now these [specific, notable] were the chiefs [leaders, princes] of David’s mighty men [strong, courageous warriors], who, together with [in unity, alongside] all Israel [the descendants of Jacob], bolstered [strengthened, supported] and strengthened [established, secured] his kingdom [royal authority, dominion], according to [in accordance with, as stated in] the word [divine message, promise] of the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] concerning [regarding, about] Israel [the chosen people]. word study 11 This is the list [number, account] of David’s [the king of Israel, a man after God’s heart] mighty men [strong warriors, heroes]: Jashobeam [a brave warrior] son of Hachmoni [a wise man, father of Jehiel] was chief [head, leader] of the officers [captains, commanders]; he wielded [lifted up, used] his spear [a thrusting weapon, lance] against three hundred [a large number, 300] men, whom he killed [slew, defeated] at one time [in a single battle, once]. word study 12 Next in command [after him, following] was Eleazar [God has helped, the name of several Israelites] son [descendant, offspring] of Dodo [beloved, uncle] the Ahohite [a descendant of Ahoach, from the tribe of Benjamin], one [a single individual, unique] of the three [a small group, thrice] mighty men [strong warriors, champions, those who are valiant and courageous]. word study 13 He [the brave warrior] was with David [the king of Israel] at Pas-dammim [the boundary of blood, Ephes-dammim] when the Philistines [enemies of God’s people] gathered there for battle [war, conflict]. At the place [location, site] with a field [land, territory] full [abundant, plentiful] of barley [a type of grain, staple food], the troops [army, soldiers] fled [ran away, escaped] from the Philistines [those who oppose God’s people]. word study 14 But Eleazar and David stationed [took up a position, stood firm] themselves in the middle of the field [plot, parcel of land] and defended [protected, rescued] it. They struck down [slew, smote] the Philistines [enemies of God’s people], and the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] brought about [gave, granted] a great [mighty, powerful] victory [deliverance, salvation]. word study 15 Three [a small group of] of the thirty [leaders] chief men went down [descended, to a lower place] to David, to the rock [a place of refuge, stronghold] at the cave [a hidden place, den] of Adullam, while a company [army, host] of Philistines [enemies of Israel, non-Jewish people] was encamped [camped, pitched their tents] in the Valley [lowland area, plain] of Rephaim [a place of giants, Raphaite territory]. word study 16 At that time [then, in a past moment] David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] was in the stronghold [a fortress, a place of protection], and the garrison [a military post, a station of soldiers] of the Philistines [people from the region of Philistia] was at Bethlehem [the house of bread, a city in Judah]. word study 17 David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] longed [strongly desired, yearned] for water [a liquid, a source of refreshment] and said, “Oh, that someone [anyone, a person] would get me a drink [give me to drink, quench my thirst] of water [a cistern] from the well [a pit, a cistern] near [by, beside] the gate [an entrance, a doorway] of Bethlehem [house of bread, a place in Judah]!” word study 18 So the Three [a select group of mighty warriors] broke through [forced a way, penetrated] the Philistine [enemy, immigrant nation] camp, drew [pulled up, extracted] water from the well [cistern, pit] at the gate [entrance, doorway] of Bethlehem [house of bread, city of provision], and brought it back to David [the king, leader of Israel]. But he refused [would not, was unwilling] to drink it; instead, he poured it out [offered, dedicated] to the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], word study 19 saying, “Far be it from me, my God [Elohim, the supreme Being], to do this! How can I drink the blood [the liquid that flows through the body] of these men who risked their lives [putting their souls in jeopardy]?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives [with the jeopardy of their souls], David refused to drink it [would not consent to it]. Such were the exploits [mighty deeds, heroic acts] of the three [a triad, a group of three] mighty men [strong warriors, champions]. word study 20 Now Abishai [nephew of King David], the brother of Joab, was chief [leader, head] of the Three [a group of elite warriors], and he lifted his spear [a thrusting weapon, like a lance] against three hundred men [a large company of soldiers], killed them [slain, defeated in battle], and won a name [gained renown, earned respect] along with the Three [this elite group of fighters]. word study 21 He was doubly [highly, more than] honored [esteemed, glorified] above the Three [the most elite warriors], and he became their commander [captain, ruler], even though he was not included [did not attain, was not equal] among the Three [the first, most prominent group]. word study 22 And Benaiah [son of a valiant man, strong warrior] son of Jehoiada was a man [individual, person] of valor [strength, might, power] from Kabzeel [a city in southern Judah], a man [person, individual] of many [numerous, abundant] exploits [deeds, achievements, works]. He struck down [slew, killed] two [a pair] champions [lion-like men, strong warriors] of Moab [a land and descendants of Lot], and on a snowy [wintry, icy] day he went down [descended, fell] into a pit [cistern, hole] and killed [slew, smote] a lion. word study 23 He also killed an Egyptian [a man of great stature], a huge man [about seven and a half feet tall] five cubits [a unit of measurement, approximately 7.5 feet] tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear [like a weaver’s beam, a long wooden rod] like a weaver’s beam [a beam used in a loom for weaving] in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club [a staff, a wooden rod], snatched the spear from his hand, and killed the Egyptian [slayed, put to death] with his own spear. word study 24 These [specific, notable] were the exploits [acts, deeds] of Benaiah [Jehovah has built, a strong warrior] son [descendant, offspring] of Jehoiada [Jehovah knows, a high priest], who won [gained, acquired] a name [reputation, honor] alongside [among, equal to] the three [a trio, thrice] mighty men [strong warriors, champions]. word study 25 He was most honored [highly esteemed, respected] among the Thirty [a group of elite warriors], but he did not become [attain to, reach the status of] one of the Three [the most elite group]. And David [the king of Israel, a man after God’s heart] appointed him over his guard [personal bodyguards, royal protectors]. word study 26 Now these were the mighty men [strong warriors, valiant ones]: Asahel [God-made, nephew of King David] the brother [male sibling, close relative] of Joab [Jehovah is father, army general], Elhanan [God has graciously given] son [descendant, offspring] of
