Isaiah 43:5 Summary

Isaiah 43:5 is a promise from God to not be afraid because He is with us, just as He was with Moses in Exodus 3:12 and the disciples in Matthew 28:20. This means that no matter what challenges we face, God is always present to comfort and guide us. He also promises to bring our loved ones to Himself, gathering them from all over the world, as seen in Ezekiel 34:13 and Psalm 107:3. This promise gives us hope and comfort, reminding us that God is our loving Father who cares for us deeply, as seen in Psalm 103:13, and will never leave or forsake us, as promised in Deuteronomy 31:6 and Hebrews 13:5.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to not be afraid when God says 'I am with you'?

When God says 'I am with you' in Isaiah 43:5, it means He is promising to be present and provide comfort, just as He did for Moses in Exodus 3:12 and for the disciples in Matthew 28:20, reminding us that His presence is our greatest comfort in times of fear.

How does God's promise to 'bring your offspring from the east and gather you from the west' apply to my life?

This promise, as seen in Isaiah 43:5, is a reminder that God is a God of redemption and restoration, and He desires to bring all people to Himself, as also seen in Ezekiel 34:13 and Psalm 107:3, where He gathers His people from all over the world.

Is this verse only for the nation of Israel, or can it apply to me as a believer?

While Isaiah 43:5 was originally spoken to the nation of Israel, the principle of God's presence and promise to gather His people is also applicable to believers today, as seen in Galatians 3:28-29, where we are all one in Christ Jesus, and in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, where God is our Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.

How can I trust God's promise when I'm facing uncertainty or fear?

Trusting God's promise in Isaiah 43:5 requires faith and remembering His faithfulness in the past, as seen in Psalm 77:11-12, and knowing that He is the same God who has always been with His people, as promised in Hebrews 13:8, and who will never leave or forsake us, as seen in Deuteronomy 31:6 and Hebrews 13:5.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Isaiah 43:5

Although the Jews shall for their sins be carried captives out of their own land northward and eastward into Babylon and the adjacent countries, and others of them shall flee southward and westward, and shall there pine away in their iniquities, as I threatened; yet their posterity I will bring back into Canaan, from all the places where they are dispersed.

Trapp's Commentary on Isaiah 43:5

This was a type of the Church in the New Testament; see Matthew 8:11 John 11:52 John 10:16 Galatians 3:28; this was also a type of the last resurrection. See Revelation 20:13.

Ellicott's Commentary on Isaiah 43:5

(5) From the east . . .—Even from Isaiah’s stand-point, the dispersion of Israel might well be contemplated in all this wide extent. The Ten Tribes were already carried off to the cities of the Medes (2 Kings 17:6). The Babylonian exile had its beginning under Esar-haddon (2 Chronicles 33:11); others may have been found before the time of Zephaniah (Zephaniah 3:10) beyond the rivers of Ethiopia. Even in the time of Joel the slave-trade of the Phœnicians had carried the sons of Judah and Jerusalem to the western isles of Javan, or Ionia (Joe 3:6).

Cambridge Bible on Isaiah 43:5

But now] Introducing the contrast to Isaiah 42:25. that created thee … that formed thee] Three verbs which express Jehovah’s creative activity are applied in this prophecy to His special relations to Israel: “create” (Isaiah 43:1; Isaiah 43:7; Isaiah 43:15); “form” (Isaiah 43:1; Isaiah 43:21, Isaiah 44:2; Isaiah 44:21; Isaiah 44:24, Isaiah 45:11, Isaiah 49:5 (Isaiah 64:8); “make” (Isaiah 44:2, Isaiah 51:13, Isaiah 54:5). I have redeemed thee] Rather, I redeem thee (perf. of certainty). see on ch. Isaiah 41:14. I have called (I call) thee by thy name] i.e. I address thee as one who is familiar and dear (Isaiah 45:3 f., cf. Exodus 31:2); stronger than the simple “call” (Isaiah 42:6, Isaiah 49:1).

Barnes' Notes on Isaiah 43:5

Fear not - (see the note at Isaiah 41:10, Isaiah 41:14; compare Isaiah 43:1). I will bring thy seed - Thy children; thy descendants. The sense is, I will re-collect my scattered people from all parts of the world.

5-7. Fear not — Resumed from Isaiah 43:1, to add a second reason for Israel’s confidence — because God commands restoration from every quarter — from east, west, north, south.
