How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated
This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against. The BSB has six, and so do the KJV, ASV, and others, maintaining the straightforward count of descendants.
Where others part company with the BSB they part company over the rendering of שִׁשָּֽׁה. The FBV opts for a total of, while the other versions consistently use six, reflecting the same numerical value.
Sentence Structuregenerated
The finite verb שְׁמַעְיָ֑ה governs the structure of the verse, with a noun phrase subject followed by a predicate that lists the descendants. The sentence structure emphasizes the lineage through a series of names, showcasing the family connections.
The word order in Hebrew places the subject first, establishing the focus on Shecaniah's descendants before detailing their names. This structure highlights the importance of each descendant in the genealogical record.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
The Septuagint translates שְׁכַנְיָ֖ה as σεξενια, which retains the name's significance but may reflect a different pronunciation in Greek. This choice indicates continuity in the recognition of Shecaniah's lineage across cultures.
The translation of the names in the Septuagint aligns closely with the Hebrew, maintaining the integrity of the genealogical record while adapting to the Greek linguistic framework.

Hattush.—Probably the Hattush “of the sons of David, of the sons of Shechaniah,” mentioned by Ezra as one of those who went up with him from Babylon in the second return, 457 B.C. (Ezra 8:2-3). If we have rightly understood 1 Chronicles 3:21, Hattush is of the fourth generation after Zerubbabel (Hananiah, Shechaniah, Shemaiah, Hattush), and so might well have been a youthful companion of Ezra. Six.—As the text gives only five names, one must have been omitted by an oversight.

CambridgeThe Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges19b–24. The Davidic Line from Zerubbabel The text of these verses is very uncertain. In 1 Chronicles 3:20 the names of five sons are given, but their father’s name (perhaps Meshullam) is wanting. In 1 Chronicles 3:21-22 the LXX. differs from the Heb. in such a way as to affect the number of steps in the genealogy; the Heb. seems to reckon but one generation between Hananiah and Shemaiah, the LXX. on the contrary reckons six; the result on the whole genealogy being that the LXX. counts eleven generations after Zerubbabel as against six in the Heb. In 1 Chronicles 3:22 again the sons of Shemaiah are reckoned to be six, but only five names are given both in Heb. and LXX.

In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.

(1) In Anglo-Saxon, had the meaning "from," "away from" (as the strengthened form "off" has still), and was not used for genitive or possessive relations, these being expressed by special case-forms.
