The Key Word חֲנַנְיָ֖ה, cha.nan.Yahgenerated

The name חֲנַנְיָ֖ה (Hananiah) means 'God has favored' and signifies divine grace. It appears multiple times in the Old Testament, referring to various individuals, including a friend of Daniel. This name reflects the belief in God's favor and intervention in the lives of His people.

As a proper noun, Hananiah is used here to identify a specific ancestor, linking the present descendants to their heritage. The parsing indicates it is a masculine noun, emphasizing its role in the male lineage.

How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated

This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.

Sentence Structuregenerated

The main clause of the verse lists the descendants, with multiple noun phrases following: וּבֶן־ חֲנַנְיָ֖ה (and the descendant of Hananiah) serves as the subject, followed by the names of the descendants as the predicate. The structure emphasizes the lineage by presenting each descendant in succession.

The Hebrew word order places the names of the descendants immediately after Hananiah, highlighting their connection to him and establishing a clear familial hierarchy.

Septuagint Backgroundgenerated

The Septuagint translates חֲנַנְיָ֖ה as ανανια, maintaining the meaning of the name as 'God has favored'. This choice reflects the translators' intent to preserve the significance of divine favor in the genealogy.

The Greek translation aligns closely with the Hebrew text, indicating a consistent understanding of the names and their meanings across both linguistic traditions.

(1) In Anglo-Saxon, had the meaning "from," "away from" (as the strengthened form "off" has still), and was not used for genitive or possessive relations, these being expressed by special case-forms. In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.

Obadiah

Servant of the Lord. (1.) An Israelite who was chief in the household of King Ahab (1 Kings 18:3). Amid great spiritual degeneracy he maintained his fidelity to God, and interposed to protect The Lord’s prophets, an hundred of whom he hid at great personal risk in a cave (4, 13). Ahab seems to have held Obadiah in great honour, although he had no sympathy with his piety (5, 6, 7). The last notice of him is his bringing back tidings to Ahab that Elijah, whom he had so long sought for, was at hand (9-16). “Go,” said Elijah to him, when he met him in the way, “go tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.”

(2.) A chief of the tribe of Issachar (1 Chr. 7:3).

(3.) A descendant of Saul (1 Chr. 8:38).

(1 Chronicles 9:16; Nehemiah 12:25) The second of the lion-faced Gadites who joined David at Ziklag. (1 Chronicles 12:9) (B.C. 1054.) One of the Princes of Judah in the reign of Jehoshaphat. (

1. The chief officer of king Ahab’s household, who preserved the lives of one hundred prophets from the persecuting Jezebel, by concealing them in two caves and furnishing them with food, 1Ki 18:4.

2. The fourth of the minor prophets, supposed to have prophesied about 587 B. C. It cannot indeed be decided with certainty when he lived, but it is probable that he was contemporary with Jeremiah and Ezekiel, who denounced the same dreadful judgments on the Edomites, as the punishment of their pride, violence, and cruel insulting over the Jews after the destruction of their city. The prophecy, according to usher, was fulfilled about five years after the destruction of Jerusalem.

The translation spread and the per-word edition marks come from the Translators Amalgamated Greek NT (STEPBible, CC BY 4.0); clause roles from the Nestle 1904 Lowfat treebank (CC BY-SA 4.0); place identifications and their confidence from OpenBible.info Bible Geocoding (CC BY 4.0), with map tiles © OpenStreetMap contributors. Gospel parallels are computed here from shared uncommon vocabulary, not taken from any printed harmony. Cross references are the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge and the subject headings are Nave’s Topical Bible, both public domain. Works under Creative Commons licences are used unchanged apart from markup removal.
