Context — The Women's Defense of Their Worship Practicesgenerated
Jeremiah 44:19 captures a moment where women assert their agency in worshiping the Queen of Heaven, challenging the idea that their actions were hidden from their husbands. They recall their rituals of burning incense and pouring drink offerings, suggesting a communal tradition that they believe was shared and accepted. This reflects the tensions between established worship practices and the prophetic calls for fidelity to Yahweh, as seen in the broader context of Jeremiah's message.

The Key Word — מְקַטְּרִים, me.ka.te.Rimgenerated
The verb מְקַטְּרִים (meqatterim) is a Piel participle, indicating an active ongoing action — in this case, the act of burning incense. This word is linked to worship practices, specifically the ritual of creating fragrant smoke as an offering to deities.
The use of this verb highlights the women's active role in their religious practices, emphasizing that they were not merely passive participants but were engaged in the rituals of their faith.
How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated
In the Berean Standard Bible, the term is rendered as making smoke, which aligns with the KJV's burned incense and the ASV's burning incense.
Sentence Structuregenerated
The verse contains multiple clauses, with the main action centered around the verbs מְקַטְּרִים (we are making smoke) and הַסֵּ֥ךְ (to pour out). The structure emphasizes the actions of the women as they recount their worship practices.
The use of conjunctions and prepositional phrases helps to connect their actions to their husbands' awareness, creating a complex sentence that reflects their defense.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
The Septuagint translates מְקַטְּרִים as θυμιῶμεν (thymiōmen), which also means to offer incense. This choice maintains the focus on the act of worship, suggesting continuity in the understanding of incense as a form of offering.
This translation choice indicates a shared understanding of the ritual significance of incense in both Hebrew and Greek contexts.

They had lost their husbands in the siege and in battles, and had suffered famine and hunger; and all because they had burnt incense to other gods: they interpret these providences as a punishment of them for not doing it as they had formerly used to do. So bad interpreters are those of God’ s providences, who indulge their lusts in opposition to God’ s law.

The Hindoos pour out water to the sun thrice a day; and to the moon whenever they worship her. The idolatrous worship of these people was a sort of imitation of the worship of the true God; only sacrifice was not common in it. The factious women here tell us in what it consisted. 1. They burnt incense to the moon, and perhaps to the sun and the planets. 2. They poured out libations to her. 3. They made and consecrated cakes to her. In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.

hev'-'nz (shamayim; ouranoi): On the physical heavens see ASTRONOMY; WORLD. Above these, in popular conception, were the celestial heavens, the abode of God and of the hosts of angels (Ps 11:4; 103:19-21; Isa 66:1; Re 4:2; 5:11; compare Da 7:10), though it was recognized that Yahweh's presence was not confined to any region (1Ki 8:27). Later Judaism reckoned seven heavens. The apostle Paul speaks of himself as caught up into "the third heaven," which he evidently identifies with Paradise (2Co 12:2).
