1 Chronicles 15:2

None ought to carry the ark of God, but the Levites] Heb. It is not to carry the ark of God, but for the Levites, Num. 4. 2, 15. Deuteronomy 10:8.

but the Levites] And they priests (Deuteronomy 31:9. Joshua 3:3.) and that upon their shoulders, v. 15. Numbers 7:9. 2 Chronicles 35:3. Not on a cart, as chap. 13. 7. for the better carrying of it on mens shoulders, the ark had four rings, and two staves, Exodus 25:12-13.

for ever] So long as that kinde of ministery lasted.

sanctified] Cleansed themselves after the ordinance of the law, and prepared themselves to the intended solemn works. See some rites appertaining hereunto, Genesis 35:2. Exo. 19. 14, 15. To legall rites, fasting and prayer were added upon extraordinary occasions, 1 Samuel 7:6. Joel 2. 15.

song] Heb. lifting up.

he instructed about the song] He taught how to begin, how to rise, how to fall, how to rest: every way how to set, or keep tune, as a skilfull singing-master. Or, as one skilfull about ordering the ark, he directed others about the manner of carrying it, with what pace to go, when to stand, and when to change bearers. See 2 Samuel 6:13.

1 Chronicles 15:23

door-keepers] These two went before the ark, as door-keepers, keeping off the people from shing against the ark: and when it was brought to the tent, they kept the entrance thereinto.

door-keepers] These two did such an office behinde the ark, following it, as the other two had done before it.

God helped the Levites] By giving them a ready, willing, and cheerfull spirit.

seven bullocks] Seven was accounted a number of perfection. It made up a week (Genesis 2:2.) sundry feasts (Levit. 23. 3, 6, 15, 34.) the yeer of rest, and jubile (Levit. 25. 4, 8.) the time of cleansing (Leviticus 12:3. and 14. 8, 9.) consecrating (Exodus 29:35; Exodus 29:37) preparing (Leviticus 22:27.) and keeping the LORDS watch (Levit. 8 35.) the stint of sprinkling blood (Leviticus 16:14.) and oyl (Leviticus 8:11.) of washing (2 Kings 5:10.) of fasting (1 Samuel 31:13.) feasting (2 Chronicles 7:9) and of sacrifices, for God commanded Jobs friends to offer up so many (Job 42:8.) Baalm had learned as much (Numbers 23:1.) David here, to make a perfect atonement offereth seven bullocks: so Hezekiah, 2 Chronicles 29:21.
