Context — The Anointing of Davidgenerated
1 Samuel 16:6 describes the moment when Samuel, following God's command, arrives to anoint the next king of Israel. Upon seeing Eliab, Samuel is convinced that he is the chosen one. However, God later reveals to Samuel that His criteria for choosing a king differ from human judgment, emphasizing the importance of the heart over appearance, as seen in the following verses.

The Key Word — מְשִׁיחֽוֹ, me.shi.Chogenerated
The noun מָשִׁיחַ (mashiyach) means 'anointed' and refers to someone consecrated for a special purpose, often a king or priest. This term is deeply significant in the Hebrew Bible, indicating a person set apart by God for leadership and service.
In this verse, it identifies Eliab as the one designated by God for a significant role, though God later clarifies that His choice is based on the heart rather than outward appearances.
How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated
The translations agree on the meaning of מְשִׁיחֽוֹ as 'anointed' or 'His anointed,' reflecting the significance of divine selection.
Sentence Structuregenerated
The finite verb וַיַּ֖רְא, and he saw, governs the main action of the verse, with a series of clauses that describe the actions that follow. The structure emphasizes Samuel's perception and declaration.
The sentence flows from the arrival of the individuals to Samuel's recognition of Eliab, culminating in his proclamation about Eliab's status before the LORD.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
The Septuagint translates the Hebrew מְשִׁיחֽוֹ as αὐτοῦ, which indicates possession, emphasizing that Eliab is recognized as the anointed one by the LORD. This choice highlights the continuity of the concept of anointing across both texts.
The translation reflects the same understanding of divine selection, though the Greek wording may suggest a slightly different emphasis on Eliab's relationship to God.
In plain words — the whole versegenerated
1 Samuel 16:6 tells us that when Samuel arrived, he saw Eliab and believed he was the one chosen by God to be king. This moment highlights God's selection process, which focuses on the heart rather than appearance.

But the Divine voice gave no reply back to the prophet’s mute questioning; and the other sons of Jesse, an imposing band of gallant youths, passed in review before the old seer, and were severally introduced to him; but the Divine voice only warned the seer that these external advantages of mere human beauty and strength, were no mark of true greatness.

Egyptian saws, so far as has yet been discovered, are single-handed. As is the case in modern Oriental saws, the teeth usually incline toward the handle, instead of away from it like ours. They have, in most cases, bronze blades, apparently attached to the handles by leathern thongs. No evidence exists of the use of the saw applied to stone in Egypt, but we read of sawn stones used in the temple. (1 Kings 7:9) The saws "under" or "in" which David is said to have placed his captives were of iron. The expression in (2 Samuel 12:31) does not necessarily imply torture, but the word "cut" in (1 Chronicles 20:3) can hardly be understood otherwise.
