Psalms 105:1

GIve thanks unto the Lord] 1 Chron. 16. 8. Isaiah 12:4.

make known his deeds among the people] Forasmuch as the Israelites were taken out of the world to be Gods people, the prophet willeth them to shew others what God had done for them.

Psalms 105:2

Sing unto him] He would have them to praise God, with voice, instruments, and heart.

Psalms 105:4

and his strength] By Gods strength and face, he meaneth the ark, where God declared his power, and presence, Psalms 63:2. and Psalms 78:61.

Psalms 105:5

Remember his marvellous works] Which he hath wrought in the deliverance of his people.

the judgements of his mouth] That is, his ordinances, and laws, Malachi 4:4. or, his judgements which he threatned to bring on the Egyptians, Genesis 15:14. Exodus 3:20.

Psalms 105:6

his chosen] Heb. his chosen ones.

Psalms 105:7

his judgements are in all the earth] Isaiah 26:9. His judgements on the Egyptians are spoken of all the world over, Exodus 9:16.

Psalms 105:8

which he commanded] His promise, which he will have as sum as his command, Psalms 133:3. and Psalms 42:8. and Psalms 44:4.

Psalms 105:9

Which covenant he made with Abraham] Genesis 17:2. and 22. 16, &c. and 26. 3. and 28. 13. and 35. 11. Luke 1. 73. Hebrews 6:17. The promise which God made to Abraham, To be his God, and the God of his seed after him, he renewed it, and repeated it again to Isaac and Jacob.

Psalms 105:11

Ʋnto thee will I give the land of Canaan] Genesis 13:15. and 15. 18. He sheweth that they should not enjoy the land of Canaan by any other means, but by reason of Gods covenant made with their fathers.

the lot] Heb. the cord, Deuteronomy 32:9.

the lot of your inheritance] Heb. line, or, cord: For so were inheritances divided by line, Psalms 16:6.

Psalms 105:12

a few men in number] Genesis 34:30. Deuteronomy 7:7.

shargers in it] Hebrews 11:9.

Psalms 105:14

He suffered no man to do them wrong] He kept them from wronging the Patriarchs, that had power to do it, Genesis 35:5.

he repreved kings for their sakes] That is, the kings of Egypt, and Gerar, Genesis 12:17. and 20. 3.

Psalms 105:15

Touch not] Touch them not, so as to hurt them.

mine anointed] Those whom I have sanctified to be my people.

do my prophets no harm] Meaning, the old fathers, to whom God shewed himself plainly, and who were setters forth of his word, Genesis 20:7.

Psalms 105:16

he called for a famine] That is, effectually brought it, 2 Kings 8:1.

he brake the whole staff of bread] Leviticus 26:26. Ezekiel 4:16. Isaiah 3:1. By sending scarcitie, as in the beginning of the verse.

Psalms 105:17

He sent a man before them] Genesis 45:5.

even Joseph who was sold for a servant] Genesis 37:28.

Psalms 105:18

Whose feet they hurt with fetters] Genesis 39:20.

he was laid in iron] Heb. his soul came into iron.

Psalms 105:19

Ʋntill the time that his word came] The word of God to Pharaoh in a dream, which is said to try Joseph, because none else could interpret it: And then was Joseph delivered: or, Gods decree and promise made to Joseph in a dream, Genesis 37:6.

tried him] Or, which tried him.

Psalms 105:20

The king sent and loosed him] Genesis 41:14.

even the ruler of the people] Heb. of the peoples. A mighty king, that had a multitude of subjects.

Psalms 105:21

He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance] Genesis 41:40.

substance] Heb. possession.

Psalms 105:22

He gave them hail for rain] Exodus 9:23. It was strange to see rain in Egypt, much more, it was searfull to see hail, and most of all, hail mingled with fire.

He gave them hail for rain] Heb. He gave their rain hail.

flaming fire] Heb. fire of flames: That is, full of flames.

Psalms 105:23

Israel also came into Egypt] Genesis 46:6.

Psalms 105:25

He turned their heart to hate his people] Exod. 1. 8, &c. God hath a secret work in it, when evill men extraordinarily love, or hate his people.

Psalms 105:26

He sent Moses his servant, and Aaron whom he had chosen, Exodus 3:10.

Psalms 105:27

They shewed his signes among them, and wonders in the land of Ham] Exodus 7:9. Psal. 78. 44, &c.

his signes] Heb. words of his signes.

Psalms 105:28

He sent darknesse, and made it dark] Exodus 10:22.

and they rebelled not against his word] That is, his word was fulfilled, as Psalms 49:14. They put them in the grave: that is, they were put in the grave: or, his signes rebelled nor: or, Moses and Aaron rebelled not; that is, they did Gods message, though with the perill of their lives.

Psalms 105:29

He turned their waters into blood, and slw their fish] Exodus 7:20.

Psalms 105:30

Their land brought forth frgs in abundance] Exodus 8:6.

in the chambers of their kings] Of the king and his princes, Isaiah 19:2. Exodus 8:3.

Psalms 105:31

He spake, and there came divers sorts of flies, and ice in all their coasts] Exod. 8. 17, 24.

He spake, and there came divers sorts of flies] So that this vermine came not by chance, but as God had appointed, and his prophet Moses foretold.

Psalms 105:34

He spake, and the locusts came] Exodus 10:4. He sheweth that all creatures are armed against man, when God is his enemy; as at his commandment the grashoppers destroyed the land.

Psalms 105:36

He smote also all the first-born in their land] Exodus 12:29.

chief of all their strength] Genesis 49:3. Psalms 78:51.

Psalms 105:37

He brought them forth also with silver and gold] Exodus 12:15.

there was not one feeble person among their tribes] None of them were sick or weak.

Psalms 105:38

Egypt was glad when they departed] Exodus 12:33. For Gods plagues caused them rather to part with the Israelites then with their lives.

Psalms 105:39

He spread a cloud for a covering] Exodus 13:21. It seems it was a large cloud, that could cover all the host from the heat of the sun.

Psalms 105:40

The people asked, and he brought quails] Exod. 16. 12, &c. Not for necessity, but for satisfying of their lust, psal. 78. 18.

Psalms 105:41

He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out] Exodus 17:6. Numbers 20:11. 1 Corinthians 10:4.

like a river] See Notes on psal. 78. 16.

Psalms 105:43

with joy] When the Egyptians lamented, and were destroyed, psal. 106. 12.

gladnesse] Heb. singing.

Psalms 105:44

And gave them the lands of the heathen] Deut. 6. 10, 11. Joshua 3:17.

they inherited the labour of the people] The houses which they built, and vineyards which the heathen planted.

Psalms 105:45

That they might observe his statutes] Gods benefits are given us, that we may serve him the more faithfully.
