Deuteronomy 9:1

this day: i.e. it is declared this day that, &c. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), App-6, where the action is put for the declaration concerning it. Punctuate thus: “Hear, O Israel this day”, &c. See note on Deuteronomy 4:26.

nations. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), App-6, for the countries inhabited by them.

Deuteronomy 9:2

children = sons.

Anakims. The descendants of Anak; the progeny of the second irruption of fallen angels (see Genesis 6:4 and App-25, and compare Joshua 11:22.

the LORD thy God = Jehovah thy ’Elohim. App-4.

consuming fire. Figure of speech Anthropopatheia. App-6.

shall destroy. Hebrew. shamad, exterminate.
