The Key Word — מָשִׁיחַ, ma.shi'achgenerated
The term מָשִׁיחַ (ma.shi'ach) means 'anointed one' and refers to someone set apart for a special purpose, often a king or priest. In this context, it identifies Cyrus as the chosen leader appointed by God to fulfill His plans for Israel.
The use of מָשִׁיחַ connects Cyrus to the broader biblical theme of anointed figures who carry out God's will. This term underscores the significance of Cyrus's role in God's redemptive history.

Sentence Structuregenerated
The finite verb אָמַר, he says, governs the entire verse, introducing the LORD's declaration. The structure includes multiple phrases that detail what God has done and will do through Cyrus.
The main clause is followed by a series of infinitive phrases that describe the actions God empowers Cyrus to take, such as to subdue nations and to open doors, emphasizing God's active role in the unfolding events.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
The Septuagint translates מָשִׁיחַ as χριστός (christos), which also means 'anointed one.' This choice aligns with the understanding of Cyrus as a divinely appointed leader.
The Greek word λέγει (legei) is used for the verb 'says,' indicating a direct communication from God, consistent with the Hebrew text.

(1) To his anointed . . .—The name is none other than the Messiah, the Christ, with which we are familiar, here and here only applied to a heathen king. It has to be remembered that the words had not yet received the special application given to it in Daniel 9:26, and had been used of the theocratic kings, of Saul (1 Samuel 26:9; 1 Samuel 26:11; 1 Samuel 26:16), of the house of David (2 Samuel 22:51; 2 Samuel 23:1), and of the patriarch Abraham (Psalms 105:15). What is meant, therefore, is that Cyrus, the future deliverer, would be as truly a king “by the grace of God” as David had been, not only, like Nebuchadnezzar, “a servant of Jehovah” (Jeremiah 27:6; Jeremiah 43:10), but…

The idea that the true God has made a personal revelation of Himself to the mind of Cyrus is not implied; Cyrus is to learn the religious significance of his mission from its results (Isaiah 45:3), just as mankind at large comes to understand it (Isaiah 45:6). The direct address to Cyrus (Isaiah 45:2 ff.) is prefaced in Isaiah 45:1 by a series of clauses describing his invincible career, which has already attracted the attention of the world. The four witnesses to this verse — Masoretic, Septuagint, Samaritan, Qumran
The Masoretic Text (MT) presents Isaiah 45:1 with a clear message directed to Cyrus, emphasizing God's support and the subjugation of nations. The Septuagint (LXX) aligns with the MT in terms of content, matching all 20 words, although it presents them in a different order and style. The Dead Sea Scrolls (1Qisaa) also agree with the MT, preserving all 20 words with minimal differences in spelling. However, 1Q8 contains 13 words, with some words restored or supplied by an editor, indicating partial preservation. The 4Q57 fragment is even less complete, containing only 2 words and requiring significant editorial restoration. Overall, the MT, LXX, and 1Qisaa agree closely, while the other Dead Sea Scrolls show varying degrees of preservation and editorial intervention.

Cyrus
(Heb. Ko’resh), the celebrated “King of Persia” (Elam) who was conqueror of Babylon, and issued the decree of liberation to the Jews (Ezra 1:1, 2). He was the son of Cambyses, the prince of Persia, and was born about B.C. 599. In the year B.C. 559 he became king of Persia, the kingdom of Media being added to it partly by conquest. Cyrus was a great military leader, bent on universal conquest. Babylon fell before his army (B.C. 538) on the night of Belshazzar’s feast (Dan. 5:30), and then the ancient dominion of Assyria was also added to his empire (cf., “Go up, O Elam”, Isa.21:2).
(the sun), the founder of the Persian empire --see (2 Chronicles 36:22,23; Daniel 6:28; 10:1,13) --was, according to the common legend, the son of Cambyses, a Persian of the royal family of the Achaemenidae. When he grew up to manhood his courage and genius placed him at the head of the Persians. His conquests were numerous and brilliant. He defeated and captured the Median king B.C. 559. In B.C. 546 (?) he defeated Croesus, and the kingdom of lydia was the prize of his success. Babylon fell before his army, and the ancient dominions of Assyria were added to his empire B.C. 538. The prophet Daniel’s home for a time was at his court. (Daniel 6:28) The edict of Cyrus for the rebuilding of the temple, (
Son of Cambyses king of Persia, and Mandane, daughter of Astyages king of the Medes. He aided his uncle Cyaxares (called "Darius the Mede" in the Bible) in conquering Asia Minor, and afterwards their joint forces captured Babylon and overran the Assyrian empire. He married his cousin, the daughter of Cyaxares, and thus at length inherited and united the crowns of Persia Media. Cyrus was foretold by the prophet Isaiah, Isa 44:28 45:1-7, as the deliverer and restorer of Judah, as he proved to be, 2Ch 36:22,23 Ezr 1:1-4. The prophet Daniel was his favorite minister, Da 6:28.

(1) In Anglo-Saxon, had the meaning "from," "away from" (as the strengthened form "off" has still), and was not used for genitive or possessive relations, these being expressed by special case-forms. In the Norman period, however, "of" was taken to represent the French de (a use well developed by the time of Chaucer), and in the Elizabethan period both senses of "of" were in common use. But after about 1600 the later force of the word became predominant, and in the earlier sense (which is now practically obsolete) it was replaced by other prepositions. In consequence the King James Version (and in some cases the Revised Version (British and American)) contains many uses of "of" that are no longer familiar--most of them, to be sure, causing no difficulty, but there still being a few responsible for real obscurities.

In the New Testament the usual word is anoigo (of opening of mouth, eyes, heavens, doors, etc.). A peculiar word, trachelizomai (literally, to have the neck bent back, to be laid bare), is used for "laid open" before God in Heb 4:13.
