He was born in 1933 and raised in Belen, a small railroad town in the Rio Grande valley of New Mexico. After attending West Texas State College in Canyon, TX, he enlisted in the Navy in 1953 and served the United States armed forces for four years. While stationed at Morocco, Arlen believed in the Person and work of Jesus Christ and was saved. Arlen attended and graduated from Tennessee Temple (Chattanooga, TN) in 1961. Arlen finished his formal education at Bob Jones University. Arlen Chitwood attributes his ministerial thrust today to A. Edwin Wilson.
While studying at Tennessee Temple during 1958-1961, Arlen attended a church which proclaimed the Word of the Kingdom from the pulpit. In Arlen's words, 'When I arrived at Tennessee Temple in Chattanooga in 1958, I asked the question, 'Where is the Bible teacher in town?' The answer which I kept hearing was always the same, 'A Edwin Wilson'.' As Arlen recalls, 'It was rather a strange situation. Here I was going to a school to study and learn things about the Bible. However, I was not learning these things at school, but across town on Sundays and Wednesday evenings.' He launched his radio, teaching, and writing ministries as the Founder and Director of The Lamp Broadcast.
